“This Is It” has been sweeping the nation by storm, coming in as the number two movie this week and making a total of 71. 9 million in the U.S. Internationally, the film’s sum total has reached 186.5 million. I feel like this movie could have done a lot better if it was released at a different time. Being released on Halloween weekend and being putted against “A Christmas Carol” could have been reasons why this film has not done as well as it should have done. Hopefully, Sony will decide to extend its release past two weeks, maybe into Thanksgiving, much like Disney did with the “Hannah Montana/ Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Tour” 3D concert.
Going into this movie, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I wasn’t much of a Michael Jackson fan and didn’t not listen too many of his songs besides “Thriller.” In fact, I didn’t even know he sung many of the songs in the film. I was very surprised that I enjoyed this film. It followed Michael Jackson as he rehearsed for his sold-out concert that would of started in the summer at London’s 02 Arena. The film was drawn from one hundred hours of being the scene footage from Jackson’s rehearsal and chronicled the months from April to June 2009.
Jackson was an incredible, sensational performer and sincerely deserves his title as the “King of Pop.” The film showed a different side of Jackson, as a hard worker dedicated to his music, his dancing, and his fans. He inspired many of the artists that we have today and paved the way for pop music in general. I enjoyed how the movie focused on him and not on interviews by random people who were in Jackson’s life. There were a few interviews by his dancers but this gave insight into Jackson as a true performer and as an inspiration for his dancers and for his fans.
This concert he was going to put on was going to be an amazing feat, unlike anything you ever saw. Each song he was going to perform had a storyline with a digitalized backdrop, phenomenal dancing and amazing special effects. My favorite was “Thriller” which featured a 3D video with monsters coming out of the screen. This film would of be so much more if it was actually in 3D especially since a majority of Jackson’s concert was already digitalized. The audience would of felt the pleasure of being there and Jackson would of seemed closer to us. That would have been an amazing feeling!
Overall, this film was excellent and I certainly hope the Academy recognizes it in the upcoming Oscar season. It was a wonder to behold and made me laugh, cry, ooo and even awwee at certain times throughout the film. It made me realize that we should look past people’s mistakes and look at them for who they really are. Michael Jackson loved what he did and cared truly about his fans, which was the main reason for this comeback performance. People keep saying that this film is just a “money scam:” but I don’t think that at all. If you believe that it is a “money scam” then simply don’t pay to see the film. I believe it is a film for anyone… the young or the old. The younger generation who don’t know much about this artist but want to learn and be inspired. Also, it is for the old who grew up with the tunes of Michael Jackson playing on the radio. Go out, see this movie and be inspired. Or if you don’t have the time to see it in theatres, the DVD is available for pre-order on amazon.com.
