Does he call you back after a date? Does he answer your phone calls? Is he cheating on you? Is he sleeping with you? Did he proposal to you yet? If he is not doing these things… then he may just not be that into you. Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Connelly , Kevin Connolly, Bradley Cooper, Ginnfer Goodwin, Scarlett Johansson and Justin Long round out the all-star cast of this ultimate real world romantic comedy, “He’s Just not That Into you." This film is also based on a book of the same name by “Sex and the City” screenwriters Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo.
The film begins with Gigi (Ginnfer Goodwin) on a date with the handsome Conor (Kevin Connolly). Many days after the date, poor Gigi is still waiting for a phone call from the schumk, who we learn has a girlfriend named Anna (Scarlett Johansson). Anna has not slept with Conor for a while and Conor continues to question their relationship. Meanwhile, Anna likes Ben (Bradley Copper) in which they meet at a convenient store at the start of the film. Ben is married to Janine (Jennifer Connelly) and they are beginning to start their new life in their home together. Ben is friends with Neil (Ben Affleck) who has yet to ask Beth (Jennifer Aniston) to marry him. Finally, Mary (Drew Barrymore) makes a few appearances in the film as a woman who keeps getting rejected by all the different technologies out there and has trouble finding love. Sounds like a story straight out of a Cosmopolitan magazine? You bet!
The film gave a fabulous and fresh look at modern day relationships. It gave wonderful insight into relationships and why they sometimes do not work out in the end. Most can relate to this film because most have been through a few of these scenarios at onetime or another. You know… waiting for that one phone call or email or waiting for your man to proposal to you. If you haven’t been through at least one of these scenarios, then you probably do not get out much or are living in a rock somewhere. Many think that some of the women in this film are desperate and whiny but I see them as modern, feminist women who are just trying to figure out men and if love exists for them. Men, it seems, are complicated creatures and the topic of how men think would make a great movie on its' own in the near future. It is easy to sympathize and root for some of these characters because you can feel their inner turmoil and frustration such as when a man doesn’t return their call, or when you are expecting to spend the rest of your life with someone and they let you down. It is frustrating!
All of the actors and actress did a great job with their roles and their material. I wish Barrymore had a much larger role in this film. She always brings a sincere freshness to the screen and her story line seemed the most relatable, especially with all the technology we have in this age. Aniston and Johansson always sparkle in all of their films. Aniston is always smart, sophisticated, funny and beautiful and I have continued to watch all of her films as she always radiates a sincere warmness. Brad Pitt does not know what he is missing! Johansson‘s character kind of pushed my buttons in this film. I was not sure if I should root for her or not but she did play her role so well. I could not see any other actress casted as Anna.
Overall this film gave excellent insight into the world of dating and relationships. I enjoyed the perfect cast, perfect storyline and actually cared about all the drama that was going on in this film. It is most definitely a classic that is up there with the “Sex and the City Movie.” I truly enjoyed this two hours and ten minute film (it did not feel like that at all!) as it felt like a breath of fresh air.
Get your 4th of July started early and enjoy all of the fireworks and explosions that this film has to offer.
