Robert Buckley wooing Heather Locklear in "Flirting with Forty."

Flirting with Forty aired on Lifetime TV this past December and now has finally hit DVD shelves. Heather Locklear plays Jackie, a divorced mother whose about to turn 40. For her 40th birthday, she travels to Hawaii where she meets the hottest surf instructor to ever exist, Kyle. Kyle is played by the even hotter Robert Buckley. They enjoy spending time with each other; however, the only problem is she is thirteen years older than him. However, when it comes to love, age is just a number…right?

A life alternating romance begins to bloom for this cougar and her young hot boy toy. It would be any single women’s fantasy to find a young twenty-something lover. Complications begin to arise when Jackie begins to question this romance. Is it just a vacation fling or is it true love? Real love is always tricky and Jackie has to find her balance between love and age.

What a great surprise for a Lifetime film and even a greater surprise that it came out to DVD. It was a wonderful and truly enjoyable film and wasn’t as melodramatic as other Lifetime movies. Robert Buckley was a great addition to the cast with his rocking body, his boyish good looks and his charming boy next door personality. Heather Locklear did not really add anything new to this film. She was not really believable as a woman in search of discovering love. It seemed like she was only reciting her lines because she did not really add any substance to her role what so ever.

The idea of single women in their thirties and forties finding love has been a recent theme in movies this year. We had Sex and the City where Carrie Bradshaw has to find love in the big, bad New York City. We had Nights in Rodanthe where Diane Lane and Richard Gere find love during a weekend together in North Carolina. Next, we have this film, which is also based off a novel The film is more realistic in its approach and something most women can relate to instead of Sex and the City and Nights in Roadanthe. While moments in the film seemed predictable, it was still very engaging and did attempt to tug at your heartstrings during some scenes. Some of the film seemed rushed and I wish Kyle’s character was a little more developed instead of being somewhat one-dimensional.

Overall, this film provided an entertaining, possibly a little sentimental, winter romance that most women and gay men dream about at least once in their life. Though it was a Lifetime movie, it was a great movie to watch with your friends or your significant other. Grab a cosmopolitan and enjoy this winter romance.
