Today is the day.  The kids are excited and ready for their trick-or-treat fun.  You have your child's costume ready to go, the house is decorated for spooktacular fun, and the candy bucket is filled to the brim waiting by the door.

So have you checked on safety yet?  In order to have a happy and safe Halloween, try the following Halloween tips posted on the city of Newark's website by the Fire Department and Mayor Cory Booker.

  • Use only flame retardant costumes. (Although this doesn't mean they are fireproof!)
  • Children should wear white, reflective clothing, or use reflective tape & carry a glow stick or flashlight.
  • Costumes should fit properly-avoid loose or baggy costumes.
  • Avoid any type of open flame.
  • Encourage children to wear face paint as opposed to a mask. Face paint should be non-toxic & meet FDA standards.
  • If wearing a mask, make sure the eyes, nose, & mouth openings are large enough for adequate breathing and full range of vision.
  • Make sure children know how to stop, drop, and roll if their clothes catch on fire.

The Fire Department recommends that you follow these additional guidelines for fire safety:

Avoid decorating with candles or torchlights.
Ensure that combustible Halloween decorations such as crepe.
Keep paper, cornstalks, and dried flowers well away from sources of heat. Keep all exits clear of decoration materials.
Remove obstacles from lawns, steps, and porches, when expecting Trick-or-Treaters
Keep indoor candles and jack-o’-lanterns away from curtains, decorations, and other combustibles that could be ignited.

Have a safe and happy Halloween!!
