Photo of Mercury by NASAMercury goes retrograde from September 7th to the 29th and most people cannot stand the idea of Mercury going into retrograde for nearly an entire month. Even some people who do not follow metaphysics or astrology groan because there are certain times in life when everything goes wrong for nearly everybody, "Mercury in Retrograde" is one of those times. So the key to breaking this retrograde is to figure out what exactly it means.

First of all, I was never a fan of the concept of any planet spinning backwards as a source of troubles. However, I cannot help but be swept up in it because more and more of popular culture has adopted the idea. And if popular culture adopts the idea, then it affects popular culture.

So let's clarify what this means:

Mercury in retrograde means that communication and perception is more likely to be misunderstood or taken out of context. This is all it means. It is not the source of anything bad that happens to you, even though it can make a bad day even worse.

So here are some things to keep in mind, not just for this month, but in general.

1. Try not to take comments about work too personally. Any criticism is only a reflection on the attempt to improve your work, not a degradation of you as a person. Also remember that if a person is giving you critique, he or she is trusting your relationship enough to be honest with you. That is a good ally to have.

If you feel offended, see rule #4. Switch gears.

2. Do not overinterpret simple messages. If your friend is going out with another friend, this does NOT mean that you are no longer as valuable because he is not spending his immediate time with you. Take things for what they are. Do not out-think a situation; life is not a game of chess with the Big Blue.

3. At the same time, if you are going to ask questions, ask questions for clarification rather than try to find hidden agendas. What often gets us all in trouble is our own paranoia and paranoia comes from overthinking. Our minds are too busy and so we fill in the gaps with our own imagination, which brings about more fear, which makes our minds more busy, so we fill in more gaps and details with our imagination, etc. It's a vicious cycle.

4. Quiet time. Find quiet time to still your mind. Cell phones off. I like taking long walks. Others like to meditate. The point is to stop thinking and turn the mental babble into silence for a little while. You do not have to pay attention to every single thought.

Paying attention to everything does not make you attentive. It makes you a machine.

Part of miscommunication is OVERcommunication. Do not forget this.

5. If you want to make yourself more understood, think of the following:
~If you think your e-mail will be misunderstood, phone instead.
~If you think you will be misunderstood on the phone, talk in person.
~If you think you will be misunderstood in person, don't communicate yet. Because if you do not understand what you need to say, then chances are the other person is not magically somehow going to get it either.

Keep these five rules in the back of your mind. And should these fail, we have nukes to blow up Mercury.
