How jewelry can be more than decorative; it can be healing.

A few weeks ago, Kelly Ness had a headache all day but she had an event in the evening that she could not miss. She made herself get dressed and without thinking, she put on a pretty necklace made of lapis lazuli and other stones and went to the event. It was not until much later after the event when Kelly realized that her headache was gone, but as soon as she removed the necklace from her neck, she experienced a migraine. The next day, looking through a reference book on stones, she found that one of the energetic properties of lapis lazuli is that it relieves headaches and migraines. She has been using that stone when her head has been sore ever since.
Ness is a jewelry maker and owner of the store, Numinous Designs, which sells jewelry made of natural stones. She has always had a fascination with rocks and crystals and collected stones as a child. After learning about Wicca, she learned more about the metaphysical properties of those stones which led to her to make jewelry. “I started experimenting with the way different stone beads interacted with the wearer and with each other to make a unique handmade jewelry item even more unique,” says Ness. “My goal is to make beautiful jewelry that fulfills a metaphysical purpose, and which doesn’t have to look like 'ritual' jewelry – anyone can wear my work at any time.”
Items, animate and inanimate, have energy inside of them so people can be affected by that energy. People can sense that an old stuffed animal or a baby blanket that is well loved by the energy that is in it. On the other end, people can pick up a knife, sense a dark biting feeling and figure that it was used with intent to harm and draw blood. By extension, stones that are considered part of the earth can also have a grounding or other effect on its wearer.
Here are some examples of the metaphysical effects that certain types of stones have:

- Tiger's Eye: Golden tiger's eye empahsizes protection and grounding. It is also a good luck stone that brings about abundance and prosperity.
- Onyx: Black onyx prevents draining of energy, especially during times of great stress when your energy is in high demand.
- Rose Quartz: Also known as the “love” stone, it brings a gentle energy that can bring about all sorts of love from family, friends and even lovers.
- Amethyst: This stone is used to keep a person's energy stable to assist overcoming addictions by relieving withdrawal symptoms. It is also helpful in maintaining sobriety if a person were to drink too much.
- Sapphire: Sapphires of all colors are helpful in meditation and mental clarity and helps to avoid depression.
“All matter produces different kinds of energies, and people are no exception,” says Ness. “You might notice this effect if you have to interact with someone in a bad mood for a long time. It’s the reason we have the expression, 'an infectious good mood'. Wearing stones and colors, which each have certain quantifiable properties, can change your personal energy to become more in line with those properties, producing a desired effect.”
Although Ness has a number of pieces available at her shop, she can work with others to make custom rings, necklaces, bracelets and other jewelry using a wide selection of natural stones. The name of her shop, “Numinous Designs,” uses the word “numinous” which means “spiritual, connected to the divine,” which serves as her inspiration into crafting her one-of-a-kind designer jewelry.
