Imagine that your life is a line. It starts at birth and ends at death, although it is far more complicated than that. Imagine that your soul is a line that has a beginning and an end. You mark off different lives in that soul, the same way scientists mark off the mesozoic era all the way up to the cenzoic era (which is the name of our present era).
The popular belief is that the soul inhabits the body, but in practice, it is the body that inhabits the soul. The soul is bigger than the body, which is why people can see auras extend from the body. Since the soul is bigger than any single body and is attached to a large "time line" of a series of physical bodies, people who are psychic use the connection into the soul to read into a person's past or future. The connection of being psychic is not based off of time or space, which is why it's not impossible for a psychic to claim that someone lived a life 2000 years in the past in ancient Greece, despite that he lives currently in the United States in present day in a matter of seconds. With the same process, it is also possible for the psychic to look forward into a person's soul-timeline and foresee the future. It's just the other direction.
Does that mean that the future is definite? Absolutely not. A psychic can see forward into the soul-timeline only on the path the target is currently on provided that nothing changes.
A very good example is the story "The Christmas Carol." When the Ghost of Christmas To Come shows Ebenezer Scrooge his future, the ghost shows him the future provided that nothing has changed. This prompts Ebenezer to ask if this is the certain future or the probable future. Not wanting the grim future to become a reality, when Ebenezer wakes up, he changes his attitude, embracing the Christmas spirit and thus changes his future.
Why explain all this about the soul and being psychic? It doesn't even begin to cover "karma" as we know it, right?
It's because before one can explain karmic law that deals with future events, there is one maxim that you'll have to accept:
"Destiny is the path of a person's life and everyone has one. Destiny happens as a person lives normally. A person who does not like his or her destiny has the power to change it.
There is a cost to change a destiny. That cost is called 'karma.'"
