The act of killing is considered one of the most heinous acts in our society because taking a life is irreversible. To perform a suicide is not only irreversible, but it is the greatest harm that one can inflict upon oneself. Suicide has such a stigma attached to it that laws forbid it and some religions consider it a sin. Aside from social and earthly concerns about suicide, there is one other matter to consider: the afterlife. Those contemplating destroying the self in order to be released from the “pain” in the current life to seek a better life in the next one may find themselves in an afterlife which actually fares worse than any struggle the current life has. The usual fate of a suicide victim is becoming a “ghost.”
In general terms, a soul that leaves the body but does not leave the world to go on to the next life results in a ghost. A soul either stays behind as a ghost because it is deeply attached to something, someone or some place so strongly that it cannot leave or he or she has so much angst or torture within themselves, that the Universe deems it too unhealthy for that soul to return as anything else. Someone who is depressed enough to commit suicide usually has so much angst that is unresolved, it paralyzes the soul from being able to travel elsewhere.
Because a ghost is so strongly attached to his or her emotions, most rational thought tends to depart that soul. In a way, one can use the term “ghost” as “ghost of a former self.” Also since the presence is attached to the emotion that is keeping the soul to this realm, people who are sensitive to that kind of energy can feel the presence as either a chill, a heaviness, or an otherwise unsettling feeling.
Ghosts generally have very little concept of time and can be in the same place for sixty years and not realize any time has passed. That is sixty years that a soul has remained a ghost, unable to rest and move on. That is also sixty years of feeling angst and torture if someone had committed suicide. To add to this, just because a person lived for seventeen years does not mean that his or her existence as a ghost would be lessened than someone who lived to be fifty; it is not uncommon for a ghost to outlive his or her life in mortal years.
Although a ghost does have the ability to move on, since it cannot think very well in its emotional state, it generally cannot pass to where it needs to go on its own. Ghosts can attempt to communicate desperately with those present, but banging on walls and taking items ends up frightening others who don't understand what they are dealing with. Without a medium, exorcist, shaman, priest or someone who can perform a spirit release, the ghost can be there nearly indefinitely.
Although it is possible that one can escape the fate of being a ghost, suicide often removes that choice from the one who committed it. To some extent, the Catholic idea that suicide is a terrible sin because you are unable to repent from that act has merit to it. Your soul becomes subject to whatever decides to pick it up and take care of it... possibly good or potentially otherwise. If none do, the soul stays where it is as a ghost. There have been scenarios where a lot of prayer for intercession was said on behalf of the suicide victim, leading them to slightly less bleak places in the afterlife. However, counting on prayer to override the strong action of killing yourself would be an error in judgment; those who would be likely to pray for your afterlife would have been the ones to pray avoiding suicide in the first place.
Then rarely there are souls that are beyond merely “angsty” in our sense of the word when they take their own lives. The depression is go great and the vibe coming from that person is so negative that very few can deal with them. Even when alive, they drain so much energy from others nearly like a huge black hole. If this situation is not rectified when the person takes his or her life, then the Universe will not be able to deal with it either. In the effort to keep the Universe balanced, the Universe will find it more efficient for that soul to cease to exist than to fix it. For those people, there is no afterlife.
Suicide is an irreversible act and this article only presents the other side of death and what spiritualists encounter. Wanting to leave your current life does not automatically mean that the next one will be paradise and no one with a sound mind and healthy body should view death as an escape plan. Because everyone has different reasons compelling them to contemplate taking their own lives, those thinking about this very seriously should consider the following:
Make the point to completely understand why your thoughts have led you to an irreversible choice rather than other options. In what way would an irreversible decision benefit you? How would other options benefit you more or even at all? If you found someone else in the same position as you were, what would you tell them to do? Ultimately, would you tell them that suicide was a viable option to whatever he or she was facing?
A soul is meant to relate to others and usually those who are very isolated cut themselves off from the rest of the world. Sometimes talking to someone like a friend or a confidante will ease your burden enough to stop feeling pressure or despair. Our connection with people will at least make our problems relatable even if the problem does prove to be unique.
If you feel there is no one that you can approach about your issues, at least talk to someone who has an open ear. Because communication is important, it is more imperative to talk over the phone rather than e-mail or an online chat. You need a response to your voice. For this, there are phone lines set up that exist to take your call. The most well-known are 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433).
If you cannot remember these, call 911. It is an emergency and that's why 911 is there.
