Whether it's campfire stories or Hamlet's father from Shakespeare, ghosts have been a longtime source of spookiness. Many of us have the fear of the dead coming back to life that are coming for us. However, ghosts are rarely monsters like the type that you need to hit with proton packs and catch in traps like the movie “Ghostbusters.” More than anything, ghosts are like people and they want some sort of acknowledgment past their own lives. Although they are intangible, ghosts are quite real.
Ghosts are souls that have lingered on earth past death. What keeps ghosts here is that they either have unfinished business that compels them to stay on earth or they have a strong emotional attachment to people or places that still exist. Ghosts do not have to be “seen” in order to exist; they can also be heard or they can signify their presence in other ways.
The most notable thing about ghosts, as compared to other spirits, is that their focus is so strong to their attachment that they cannot leave the world even if they left their bodies. When their souls cannot move on, ghosts will go to places that are most familiar to them. Ghosts are not prone to logic if it keeps them from their attachment or their business. If a ghost haunts a place, all the ghost can think about is that the house belongs to her. The ghost may not even realize that she died or that decades have passed and a new family owns the place. On the other hand, sometimes a ghost will linger around a person out of a constant but misguided need to protect someone, whether the person actually needs protection or not.
In a case of a little girl haunting a house, all she may say to a medium is “This is my house!” and attempt to scare the residents because she is not able to focus on anything else except “her house.”
However, in getting a ghost to leave, screaming at a little girl ghost has the same effect as screaming at a real little girl; they can cry and throw tantrums and it is generally ineffective.
The key to getting a ghost to move on is to understand why the ghost is attached to a person or place. One ghost can remain attached to a house because he bought it and died before he could find a wife to share the house. Once the reason is addressed, a medium can bring the ghost resolution in any number of ways: symbolically “buy” the house from him, get the ghost a “wife,” or as unfriendly as it sounds, evicting the ghost from the premises. As long as the ghost feels it is a resolution, the soul will no longer be bound to the attachment and it is free to move on.
With shows like “Ghost Whisperer,” “Medium,” and even the iconic cartoon character Casper the Friendly Ghost, television programs and movies are changing popular culture's attitude towards ghosts by portraying them more like people rather than monsters. However, with a bed sheet and a pair of scissors to cut out the eyes, they will always remain the easiest monster costumes to make on Halloween night.
