Feeling stressed? Hug a tree.

Trees, like plants, are important in our environment because they use photosynthesis that releases oxygen that allows us to breathe. Beyond this, trees can bear fruit, provide shade, become a landmark for hide-and-seek, and become lumber for our buildings and furniture. And on a day when things are too difficult to handle, trees are a good place to release our own stress and ground ourselves.
Grounding is an important technique because on a metaphysical level, it serves to draw us back from negative experiences and from staying within our heads all the time. At times, people very connected to the metaphysical neglect their physical bodies and the dissonance messes with peoples' heads. On a practical level, grounding is important because stress prevents people from being effective and it is not a good feeling to have.
A tree is good place to start for people who have no idea where to start grounding when they are very stressed. Physically, a tree has roots connected to the ground and branches full of leaves that stretch to the sky towards the sun. If one can visualize this, that is half of the grounding exercise.
Another important part is finding the right tree. It can be a tree at a park, at house, on a hike, or even one that is planted at work. The right tree will feel solid against your palm. Either palm will work, although traditionally, the left palm is used. That is based on the belief that negative energy leaves you through your left hand and positive energy comes into you through your right hand.
After finding the right tree, place your palm against the tree and take a couple of deep breaths. Imagine putting any pressure or stress through the palm and into the tree. Allow the rest of your body to be still and allow your palm and hand to do all the work. Bow your head, face the tree, close your eyes or do whatever stance is natural to you.
Then visualize your body, as if it was full of negative airy gunk and pushing it through your body, into the arm, out the palm and into the tree. This process may take a few minutes and one sometimes experiences the arm tensing up or the hand latching onto the tree like a claw. Sometimes, the arm and the hand will shake and vibrate as the negative energy is moving out. Those actions are completely normal. It if helps, visualize the tree taking in your unwanted energy and using it to process food for itself.
Stay there until you feel that all of the negative energy has left the body. Gradually, the body will relax with the arm and the hand going last. At times, the hand that is against the tree will cramp but it is important to stay connected to the tree as long as you can stand it. At some point, your hand that is connected to the tree will no longer tense and then relax. Take a couple more deep breaths and very gently look at your surroundings. Avoid very sudden movements and when ready, release your hand from the tree.
It's very important when doing this exercise to meditate upon getting the negative energy out of you rather than think of your to-do list for the day. When grounding, remember that the time and the energy is an investment in you, not your tasks.
