Fort Worth -- If Jimmie Johnson had won this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, the race for his fourth consecutive Sprint Cup season title would have been all but wrapped up. Now Johnson will go into the last two races, needing to actually race.
A crash on the third lap of the Dickies 500 put Johnson back 120-laps, allowing him to finish only 38th. His points lead went from 184 to 73, after Mark Martin finished fourth.
“You know it's still a respectable lead,” Johnson said after the race on ABC. “73 points with two to go is a pretty good position to be in, but I hate that we gave up all those points tonight.”
Johnson made contact with Sam Hornish Jr. in turn two. The points leader looked like he was going to be able escape with just a minor fender bender, but lost control and slammed into the inside wall.
“Sam just lost it inside of me. I wish he would have waited a little bit longer to do that. He can do that from time to time,” said Johnson. “It's just one of those things. We were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Using crew members from teammates Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon, the Hendrick Motorsports team worked on the car for over an hour. Johnson stayed inside the whole time it was in the garage.
“The guys did a great job of getting me back out there and picking up a few more spots. We didn't want to do this by any means, but we'll go to Phoenix and race.”
