Michael Jackson will best be remembered for his incredible musical and dancing gifts. What is less known was Michael Jackson’s status as a sci-fi and comic book fanboy.

Back in 1986, Jackson filmed Captain EO, a 3D movie for Disney’s Epcot Center. The sci fi adventure featured Jackson as Captain EO. Captain EO and his crew were to deliver a gift to an alien Queen played by Angelica Huston. They were captured and tortured, but Captain EO’s musical talent saved the day. Disney offered a special 3D Captain EO comic book that could only be purchased at the park. Anyone with the comic should consider themselves lucky – they are rare and cannot easily be found.

A huge comic book collector, Jackson was photographed in October 1998 at the Golden Apple comic book store.  He brought his three children for a comic book shopping spree that resulted in piles of comic purchases.

This spring, the auction of Jackson’s personal items included several fanboy items. Apparently Jackson was the proud owner of his very own Batman Suit, specially fitted just for him. He also owned several life sized Spider Man figures and a huge Superman Statue. These items are all pictured in the auction catalogue.

The most telling connection to Jackson’s love of comics is his attempt to purchase Marvel comics in the late 1990s to help out Stan Lee, the creator of so many Marvel classic comics. Jackson retained counsel to work out the deal, but it never panned out.  The story is detailed in The Comics Journal

It seems fitting that Jackson would be captivated by the comic book industry. His ongoing search for his lost childhood, along with the superhero phenomenon made comic books a perfect escape for a man forever in the spotlight.
