During Michael Jackson lifetime, his music and personal life inspired enormous amounts of interest, resulting in numerous unauthorized biographies. The quality and tone of the books are as varied as Jackson’s own body of work, ranging from puff pieces to more critical looks at Jackson’s behavior.

Michael Jackson: The Magic and the Madness by J. Randy Taraborrelli created quite a stir when it was published in 1991. This was one of the first truly sensational tell-alls about Jackson. Taraborrelli and his investigator alleged Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor had a food fight in his trailer that resulted in $3,000 in damages, that he once had a thing for then 13 year old Tatum O’Neil, and examines the family dynamics along with the then shocking plastic surgery issues.

2002 brought Michael Jackson: An Exceptional Journey: The Unauthorised Biography in Words and Pictures by Darren Brooks. This more respectful biography includes a comprehensive list Jackson’s albums, a history of Jackson and reports on what had been a five year performing and recording break for Jackson.

Michael Jackson: The Early Year was also published in 2002. The book was written by Chris Cadman and Chris Halstead. Instead of examining Jackson’s personal life, this book focuses on the music and includes a complete, chronological listing of every album (and track), singles, and collaborations released by Michael Jackson. The book covers the pre-Motown days to his 2002 release.

Michael Jackson: The Man Behind the Mask is a tell all penned by former employee Bob Jones in 2005. Jones had served as Jackson’s publicist for 34 years and wrote the book after being fired by letter in 2004. The book is filled with lurid tales of Jackson’s private life from the man who leaked the story of Jackson and the hyperbaric chamber.

In 2007, Darwin Porter's book, Jacko, His Rise and Fall: The Social and Sexual History of Michael Jackson, was published. This 542 page book has over 100 photos and a detailed index of celebs and hangers-on who came into contact with Jackson over the years. The book looks at the abuse Jackson suffered at the hands of his father, his relationship with Elizabeth Taylor, his two brief marriages, his three children and all rumors.

Finally, approaching Jackson from another angle, is Aphrodite Jone's Michael Jackson Conspiracy.   This 2007 release addresses what she perceives as the media’s attack on one of the most famous men in the world. She takes a critical look at his criminal trial and the accusations against him. The book includes actual trial testimony and has an introduction written by Jackson’s criminal attorney.

This is just a small sampling of the many Jackson biographies out there. All it takes is a little digging to unearth more. Copies of all these books can be found online at eBay, Amazon, Barnes & Nobles, Alilibris.com and other sites.
