Every morning, when I first wake up, and before the children start their day, I always come downstairs and read every story I can about Autism. Usually, the stories are about the latest find from scientists or the latest cure-of-the-day.
I was pleasantly surprised this morning to find this inspirational story on the New York Times website.
Dan Mulvaney, 21, has accomplished what many thought was impossible. He received his high school diploma. Not only did this young man with Autism graduate high school. He also has been able to have two jobs and a place to live independently from his parents.
Our oldest starts her senior year in high school this August. She will graduate with her class and then attend 3 more years of high school for job training.
She will also live at home until we can not care for her any longer. I am hoping that will be a very long time. I know there will come a time I have to let her go and live independently from us, but for now, I want her with us. The world is hard enough for Autistic adults. I feel a soft place for her to come home to every day, is a bonus.
There are an amazing number of children with Autism who are soon going to be adults with Autism. I know, these past 18 years have flown by in our home. My wish is that educators will take notice to stories such as Dan Mulvaney's and begin to not only educate our children with Autism better, but train them to be productive once they are out of school.
