Millyz goes Out on a Limb!

I had a show last weekend in Bangor, Maine alongside Millyz, who had recently released his latest effort “White Boy Like Me.”

We greeted each other and I introduced myself to his people and exited his hotel room to go back to mine. Twenty minutes later or so, I heard a knock on my door and it was Millyz and his people preparing to go to the venue.  He was familiar with who I was with so everyone exchanged greetings as I was jumping rope to get going (no it wasn’t double dutch). Milly, Louie V duffle bag in hand, gave me and my people copies and a few extras of his project. I took mine and put it in my bag for later listening.

Fast forward the performance, after party-ish clubbing, female punching a guy in the face and knocking him against the wall, hitch hiking, drunken humor and fun that almost got us kicked out of the hotel, I listened to the cd once I dropped off my people to allow me some silence and clarity to enjoy or not and form my own sole opinions.

As I put in the cd, the intro sounds like just that. The talking, musical production, then a few key bars that lets the listener know what to expect. As the cd continues, visits from Masspike Miles and Mr. “Somebody Call 911” himself Sean Kingston appear unexpectedly (well if you listened like me without looking at the cover design). I am now in tuned and digging what I am hearing thus far. At that moment a record comes on that I recently argued with someone about being a dope record hands down, “Cry Baby” featuring Killa Mike, Smoke Bulga, Red Café and Sheek on the hook produced by Twice As Nice. This record is dope! The arrangement, the styles, sample all work for me. “Bang bang with the gang but I never throw a sign” Milly says in his second 8 bar stanza.

As the cd continues, there are standouts like Sowed Up feat Cyrus DeShield where Millyz is harmonizing and playing with Auto Tune and “screwing” his voice in some parts of the song to a Nelly ProTools track that sounds like what an acid and shroom trip would resemble. There are some records that I didn’t listen to fully or as constant as the ones aforementioned put me in a certain mood. But the title track addresses what it is apparent at first glance; “WhiteBoy Like Me” Millyz exclaims “I’m Eminem if he had swagger/ I’m Boston George if he was a rapper.”

The standout records to me BY FAR are the aforementioned “Cry Baby”, “Billion Dollars feat Nancia” b/w the Billion…Rmx feat Smoke Bulga and Roc Dukati”, “Out on a Limb” and “T-shirt and Panties feat Sheek”

I have played “Out..Limb” and “T-shirt..” over 20 times in the past two days!

All in all, “Whiteboy Like Me” is a solid effort. The music is definitely in a lane and is relatable by some and not others like any other artist. I do commend Millyz for his effort and expression and project collaborators from Killer Mike to producer J. Cardim, he brought out the artillery and is obviously ready to war.
