Haven't had a chance to check out the Heifer Village at Heifer International yet?
Check out the Heifer VIllage slide show here and gain a sneak peak at the impressive eco-educational center located right in the heart of Little Rock's downtown, with modern LEED certified architecture, wetlands preserved right behind the facility, even a few resident shorebirds - killdeer to be precise - living along the perimeter of the 'village.'
And by the way, we should use the word village loosely, as the village consists of a building (lovely) with sadly, a not very fung shui lobby - too many plaques and banners baracading the entrance. Not quite enough welcome or 'come on in ya'll' feeling to it. Still, a very fine beginning.
The Heifer Village general layout
For the moment, Heifer VIllage has a few basic displays, some friendly-enough docents, a smattering of computer monitors that ask you to plan how you are going to save the earth and then extract a committment from you which is projected up on a big screen to shame you into compliance. And we should be ashamed, all of us. Or is it all just a little bit too late? That's what Heifer seems to want you to think about, that there are still hunger-ending, earth-saving solutions worth implementing.
Either way, Heifer forces you to give them personal data first before it allows you to commit to anything using the computer. A very sneaky way to capture the names of young visitors?
Let's hope that the great big auditorium gets put to good use to inspire us all to take action. Certainly, it will. Still, it's a bit tough to believe that a few compostible corn based forks, like the ones used at the Cafe@Heifer will solve anything. Do they get composted? That would be a worthwhile exhibit.
For now though, as long as we think it's OK to eat our meals from tiny plastic containers - as sold in the cafe@Heifer - then there's still a mixed message being sent about what constitutes a sustainable lifestyle. The message: you can save the earth and still continue eating like a throw-away society? The yogurt sold in the cafe also has high fructose corn syrup in it. Not very health friendly.
But at least Heifer has the courage to start the conversation...and to take action on the ground under difficult conditions around the globe. So, check out the pics, folks! A worthy cause supported by dedicated people.
