If you are like me, you rarely miss watching your favorite professional [American] football team. However, you find yourself traveling to Panama during the NFL season. What to do?

First, DIRECTV services Panama and offers NFL Sunday Ticket, allowing fans to catch every NFL game each Sunday. XS Memories, located in Santa Clara (Coclé province; t: [001-507]993-3096) and owned by Ex-pats from Chicago, has the Sunday Ticket package (and very good hamburgers). The Chicago Bears will often be the game of choice, but you can ask to switch during commercials and will likely be able to catch your game if it is not during the Bears game. Lodging and RV hook-ups available if you want to spend the night.

If your game of choice is played on ESPN Monday Night Football you likely can find a hotel where you can watch the game (albeit in Spanish). Although most rooms will only have ESPN2, ask at the front desk about the possibility of viewing ESPN. Once, while staying in a hotel in Penonomé (Coclé province), I inquired and the receptionist found a small boy who played with the remote for a few minutes. He then accompanied me to my room to proudly show me that ESPN was now available on my television.

Another alternative is to listen to the game via the Internet (or at least watch the updates). Check NFL.com for a variety of options. Many Internet cafes are closed on Sunday, but with prices hovering around $1.00 an hour, you may find yourself held up in the café for three hours.

If you are visiting American friends in Panama, be sure to ask if they or any of their friends have DIRECTV – dishes are fairly common and you may just luck out.

Finally, you can always plan your trip for the Bye week or off-season! Go (insert your team here) Packers!
