Adagio, on-line purveyors of some of the most interestng and unusual teas on the Internet, have created bacon for those who cannot or will not eat pork, turkey, or soy bacon. In fact you don't even need teeth to consume this bacon. All you need is a mouth. They have developed not one but two bacon-flavored teas.
This isn't a surprising development. Even some hardcore vegans have a hard time resisting the smell of bacon. There are few foods as lusciously scented as the aroma of bacon sizzling in a frying pan. Even though most people know about the fat, the sodium, and the nitrosamines one consumes along with the flavor, bacon is still a highly popular food. It's been estimated that America produces over two billion pounds of bacon a year. This despite the fact that the health dangers it may cause should require it to be labeled the same way they do cigarettes.
Regardless of all this, most of us still love the taste of bacon. It only stands to reason that someone, sometime, would try to produce the flavor of bacon without the fat, the salt, the chemicals, or the calories, let alone the death of pigs or turkeys. Adagio's answer is Bacon tea and BACON! tea, two tea blends created with flavors intended to resemble bacon.
Bacon tea, created by Robert Piriot, consists of gunpowder green tea, lapsang souchong, and almond. It comes in a 4-ounce tin with a picture of Home Simpson holding a pig upside down. The price is $10.00 plus shipping.
BACON! tea, created by Charlotte Ellett, is lapsang souchong, apple, and caramel. It also comes in a 4-ounce tin for $10.00 plus shipping. This tin doesn't have Homer Simpson. It reads "It's BACON!".
The key ingredient in both teas is lapsang souchong, a black tea from China that is smoked as part of teh processing. It doesn't actually taste like bacon, but it has a rich, smokey flavor that tastes of campfires and fireplaces on a winter evening. It's wonderful with plain meats, sharp cheeses, tart apples, and an number of other foods. It's also very good to marinade with if you want a smokey flavor in your food.
