A few years back eBay purchased Skype from the developers. The plan was to integrate skype into the user experience of online auction, social communication if you will. Sadly though, this was something that never really turned into much. Sellers didn't want to use it, and buyers felt wierd using it. So skype fell by the wayside.
For a while now the geek community has been praying that eBay would sell skype. Hell, we have been fearing that they would put skype out to die. There was even an episode fairly recently on the Twit network that talked about this very ordeal. To many of use have turned skype into a necessity. I even pay for skype so I can make calls to land lines and have a home phone. Corporations use skype for affordable solutions. Most importantly, families use skype to communicate with one another.
Well, eBay has signed a definitive agreement to sell skype, and for a whopping 1.9 billion dollars! Though this move was probably all done for eBays benefit. There is hope that finally Skype will be getting the attention that it deserves and needs. One hope is that we will get multi-video chat. This would be great to re-unite families that are spread all over the country and even world.
