Today, it's hard to imagine a time without social sites. We have all become so used to the fact of a MySpace or Facebook that we are numb to it. But when a new site comes out, some are more than reluctant to join the site. Even if that site can open up a ton of new possibilities.
Brightkite is a networking site that does more than what we are used to with Twitter or Facebook. With Brightkite you check into a location and make posts from that location. It is actually a great service. I have been using it since nearly the beginning. The problem people have with the service though is the checking into locations. Most ask "What if some one starts stalking me"?. Well I think that is possible with any site. The thing with Brightkite though, is you can control your privacy settings. You can be completely public, completely private, or even a mix so friends can see more specifics than the occasonal lurker. Yet another advantage that I see over lets say twitter is, for some one to follow you, it has to be mutual. You can also choose to trust a friend or not. This allows you a ton of control when you are setting up your privacy settings.
But I guess the main question is, why would you want to use Brightkite? Well for me the most useful aspect is the location part of the service. If I am traveling, I can check into my hotel and post a public question about bars or restaraunts. With in just a few minutes you can get responses from local people telling you places that are good, and places to avoid. If you are really comfortable you can ask if there is any one that would like to show you the town or meet up for some drinks to socialize.
More great features to Brightkite include: The ability to post photos, cross posting, sharing with your Facebook and Flickr account and many more features coming in the near future.
