Recently I have noticed that on Social Networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace and digital photo albums such as Flickr a war is brewing about posting pictures and tagging people in them.

Let's say you just had a party and a bunch of your friends attended and you wanted to post the pictures to show what a blast everyone had.  Once you tag the people who are in said pictures, you receive comments from a certain guest, asking for you to please take down the pictures of her as she was "having a bad hair day".

Another example is people posting pictures from the past, perhaps with old flings or during those awkward stages before ProActive was on the market.  Yes, it's a nice way to preserve memories, but really?  Does the world need to see how dorky we all were in 7th grade?

What to do?  Here are a few ways to approach this dilemma from both sides of the experience.

  • Before posting your pi cures take a moment and think about your purpose for posting.  If it to capture a fun memory then do so but perhaps refrain from tagging others in case they might get offended.
  • If you do tag someone in your album and they ask for you to remove the tag or the picture, please do so.
  • If you come across a picture in which you have been tagged and are not happy with it, you have the right to remove the tag, and in fact now block the tag from re-appearing!
  • On the flip side, if you do come across a rather flattering photo of you and you were not tagged...tag away!

In order to not ruin your online relationship and preserve your friendship, it is always better to discuss the reason for removal of tags.  It gives your friends an idea of your comfort with their sharing of private moments or not so hot ones in the future.

If you have a Nagging Tagging question or comment please let me know at havi@health-e-connections.com.  Happy Posting!
