I recently visited Jada Coles in Coral Gables for some live music by my favorite local band, Subprime, and the best I can offer is that the place has "promise," but please check the place out for yourself and form your own opinion.

Jada Coles is located on Coral Way (South side), just West of 22nd Avenue. This is a busy intersection along a busy and heavily-traveled corridor. The parking around Jada Coles is therefor horrendous. I found a spot in a meter across the street, adjacent to a gas station, and that specific area was a little sketchy. And crossing Coral Way at night is like you landed as the protagonist in a crazy and twisted game of Frogger (thanks Spence)! I found out subsequently that there is a car lot on the same side of the street as Jada's. This is vital information that the proprietors left off their Website because that lot is not easy to spot.

The place had a nice vibe to it, and Subprime never disappoints.  After conversing with a number of bar patrons, it quickly became clear that it was because of the band that the place had anyone in it as the majority of the patrons in attendance were there to watch and listen to Subprime. It is hard for me to imagine that Jada's brings in too big of a crowd otherwise.

The food is unimaginative, deep-fried bar-food. Chicken wings, fries, cheese sticks, and burgers? Yawn. I cannot imagine why a proprietor, in this day and age of folks so attentive to finances and especially their disposable-income budgets, would not find some way to deliver more personal flair and imagination and creativity to a menu above what your distributor tells you sells best and is easy to prepare in a deep fryer. Come on, doesn't someone in the family have a favorite sandwich recipe or other guarded food-gem that you can showcase? I have a great pasta recipe I can part with, relatively inexpensively!

Lastly, I was wholly unimpressed when a Beam + water and Stoli + soda cost me $16.00. Really? Did I take a wrong turn on Coral Way and end up on South Beach? I was left with the impression that Jada's inflated the drink prices to capitalize on the crowd Subprime attracted. Enough said on that one.

The place is a great venue for live music though. The layout and acoustics work well. And the place is small and cozy and comfy. They have Happy Hour everyday from 4 to 8 p.m. and ladies drink free on Friday nights during the same time period.

Other cool places to watch live music include Bougie's in South Miami and Mickey Byrne's in Hollywood.

Jada Coles is located at 2224 Coral Way, Coral Gables, Florida. (305) 456- 9242.
