Shake what your mama gave you – actually, just let the pros do it. We don’t want anybody getting hurt! The weekend we all patiently await has finally come upon us, when more than 20 international and local reputable crews give it everything they got on the stage at The Palace of Fine Arts Theatre. Ladies and gents —SF Hip Hop Dancefest has arrived.
The Bay Area has been proving its hip-hop worth for decades with notables like E-40, Mac Dre, Too $hort, Hieroglyphics and even J-5, but this event is what put SF on the map for hip-hop dance as well. Celebrating its 10th year in business, make sure to look out for local crew Mind Over Matter who always bring interesting beats with creative formations and there isn’t one bad looking one in the bunch (which makes it an extra-special treat!!).
What I especially like about this year’s show is that there are TONS of different options not only for seeing one or both shows this weekend, but there’s so many other events tacked on to this dance bonanza. For example, there’s an option to take master classes with visiting performers, or after the show on Saturday, there’s a VIP/ performer party that you should go to if need to mingle with the stars and pick their brains or to just plain get sauced after seeing an excellent show. Either way—it’ll be well worth the money.
Now I’ll admit, I could stand to learn a bit more about the origins and the deep-rooted respect and strength that is expressed in hip-hop dance. I appreciate the dance for the pure art, beauty and clear-cut hard work that goes into making a piece. Being a dancer myself, I can at least respect that. But learning helps the progression of life, so I’m sure you could stand to learn some, too —that’s why I highly recommend seeing the screening of the documentary, Everything Remains Raw by filmmaker Moncell Durden (also a member of the Mop Top Crew) about hip-hop’s cultural lineage premiering at SFHHDF. Check out the trailer here.
If you can’t go all weekend, you can pay by the day/event.
