Whatever you call the food at the Rio—Mexican diner, comfort food, Tex-Mex, yummy—there is no mistaking that it has had a place in the hearts and stomachs of locals for years.
Between the high ceilings, original train-station architecture, taco lady decoration, local artists’ displays, legend of the Purple Lady and diner counter bar, Rio Grande Café is a contradiction at every turn. This being said, it works perfectly and is a comfortable and downright fun place to dine downtown!
Daily lunch specials for $7.95 are offered at Rio Grande Café Monday through Friday from 11 am to 2:30 pm and include Chicken Fajita (Monday), Super Burrito (Tuesday), Tamale Combo (Wednesday), Taco Loco (Thursday) and Steak Ranchero Combo (Friday). A generous menu of a la carte items and combinations served with rice and beans is available every day of the week. Do not expect this to be the most authentic Mexican food you’ve ever eaten but do expect a great atmosphere, filling food and reasonable prices. Service is usually knowledgeable and friendly but brisk as the tables are often full and a wait is a regular occurrence.
Start your meal off with chips and salsa (each person at the table will get their own bowl of salsa) and if there are four of you dining anytime after noon, you can all share a pitcher of some of the best margaritas in town.
