When I think of the Wolves I think of one thing; and that one thing is winning. I think of a team who, since becoming a franchise in 1994, has only not gone to the playoffs once. I think of a team who has won not two or three, but four championships, in the span of ten years. I think of a team who won the top prize in not one but two leagues, and has been feared by all who face them.
Now looking at their record and how they have seemingly fallen off the face of the hockey map I am forced to think about the possible reasons why they are struggling so bad. I hate to say it but the first person I want to look to for answers is the new head coach Don Granato. Mind you under John Anderson, the Wolves former coach from 1996 to 2008, the team was amazing and top dog where no matter who they faced they were respected.
Fast forward a year after Anderson managed to win his fourth cup with the team and get promoted to head coach of the Wolves' NHL affiliate the Atlanta Thrashers and what do you see? You have a team who is an absolute joke and the complete opposite of everything John Anderson pushed hard to make. They are the laughing stock of the league who, as of late, has not been able to win games for anything against even the worst of teams.
I really want to write this with all honesty, but feel as though I am betraying my loyalty to the team I have loved since I was a kid by saying what I really feel about this at the present time. John Anderson has worked too hard to have this team be in the state that it is in right now. Again, I hate to be repetitive, but this is a complete unacceptable embarrassment.
A dominating team is only as good as they think they are. If you don't think you can play and pull out a win it's just not going to happen. New players or not Granato needs to change his strategies because it is far too apparent that whatever he is doing now is not working.
The Wolves have gone 0 for 6 in the new year, making their losing streak an unacceptable 0 for 7 total. The entire reputation of this once respected and feared franchise is hanging in the balance. Granato and these players need to wake up and realize they are not only hurting themselves but this team as a whole which has a reputation to uphold.
Hopefully these two days off between tonight's 4 to 1 blowout and Wednesday night's game will give them some time to pull together and figure something that will produce the results the fans of the Wolves deserve.
