In what was undoubtedly a bittersweet moment, myself and the rest of the 11,718 fans in Allstate Arena were torn between a former team hero and the new squad. Darren Haydar, captain of last year's Calder Cup winning team, returned to Allstate in front of many fans happy to see him back in the arena but sad to see him in another team's uniform. He was cheered while being announced during the pregame, but his welcome was short lived after scoring a game against the Wolves in the second period.
It did not make much difference though seeing that the Wolves completely shut the Griffins, affiliates of the 2008 Stanley Cup winning Detroit Red Wings, down making the final tally 6 to 3. Following Turple's first loss with the Wolves on Friday night, it was nice for him to show his moves on home ice in front of such a lively crowd.
This was by far one of the largest crowds I have personally seen at the Allstate, far outdoing the 9,808 that were in attendance the night the Wolves captured the Cup this past June. It was such a great time with fans cheering loud and just letting loose watching our Wolves battle it out and take such a great win at home.
Although it was hard to boo for Haydar, we all know we have to stay true to our boys in maroon and show them more support then anybody else. That, like a few other minor things, is the downfall of having your team be apart of the AHL. You see so many players come and go it is hard to watch them leave and pursue other teams. Either way we will always respect every man who ever has the privilege to wear a Wolves uniform, no matter where they end up.
