Breathe in, breathe out! Yes, it is so easy to do until the nose has some congestion. The season is near when stuffy noses plague many of us. From grocery stores, schools, airplanes and more, a chronic stuffy nose can be difficult to deal with as well as stubborn to eliminate. Over the counter medicines sometimes do not work efficiently plus the side effects that may incur are not always pleasant. Fortunately, there is another alternative that can be found in many health and natural food stores that may relieve the congested head in less than a half hour.

Bi Yan Pian is a powerful formula and literally means "nose inflammation pill" in Chinese, working wonders on a stuffy nose. This little brown pill is marketed for those who chronically suffer from allergies and inflamed nasal passages. It has been used in China and other parts of the world for centuries and it is very effective. It is a mix of 11 herbs containing magnolia flower, Xanthium fruit, wild chrysanthemum and a small amount of Chinese licorice root.

Bi Yan Pian works as a mild herbal decongestant. It will soothe the membranes when mucous and phlegm won't budge and calms the passages after about 20 minutes. It is effective for sinus infections in the beginning stages. It works by clearing heat from the nasal passages and expels toxins from the area. It calms the common cold, allergic rhinitis as well as acute or chronic sinusitis. Terry Courtney, dean of Bastyr University's School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine cautions that if there are no results in 20 minutes after swallowing, it is best not to continue the pill. It is not for everyone. Pregnant women should always let their doctor know if they are using it and it can raise the blood pressure a bit due to the licorice root content. It is considered very safe and the dosage, according to Plum Flower Brand, is up to 3 tablets per day, 3 times per day.

If tablets are troublesome for the sufferer, there are teas available that contain Bi Yan Pian. Traditional Medicinals offers a Breathe Easy tea that promotes respiratory health. They recommend 3 cups of Breathe Easy per day. Researchers at the Morehouse School of Medicine based in Atlanta, Georgia discovered 27 patients who drank 4 cups of the Breathe Easy tea per day had fewer headaches and less congestion in the head. The formula has been known to dry the sinuses more than it should so it is best to use caution when first experimenting with the herbal mix.

Chinese herbs like Bi Yan Pian have worked for centuries so being that persistent, the herb must do the job or it wouldn't still be around. It is time to breathe a sigh of relief with Bi Yan Pian.
