How much longer? How much longer? How much longer? Every few minutes she asks “How much longer?” You might think, she would know it would be a while to get to where we want to go. She has been there before and must remember how long it would take. She is seven and has no patience. Nor do her parents who live in this fast food society. Everything comes quickly, Except God. God has his own timing and we need to patiently wait on Him.
We are often impatient in waiting on God. We want answers when we want them. Like a child waiting on cake and ice cream, we brood, we stomp our feet, we express anger towards God because he is taking his sweet time to meet our needs. Our impatience is compounded by our understanding of what God has promised to us.
Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord…. You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts for the coming of the Lord is near. James 5:7
An old hymn tells us that, “God may not come when we want him to, but he always comes on time.” His time frame is not the same as ours. This lesson is often a difficult pill to swallow, especially when you are struggling in your own spiritual desert. Even Christ spent time in his wilderness. One of these wilderness wanderings entailed his being tempted by Satan. He had been fasting for forty days when the adversary came upon him tempting him. After successfully completing the temptation and returning from the wilderness, Jesus preached probably the greatest message to his disciples, what we now call “The Sermon on the Mount.”
The Lord will do all that he has promised to, we just need to patiently wait on Him. Doors will be opened when they need to be opened. God’s provision will be there when we need it. Our futile attempts to rush God will only be met with disappointment. Where impatience brings great anxiety, patience brings peace.
So what is a person to do while waiting on God? Be patient and strengthen our hearts. When we remember that God is going to return, our faith is strengthened. Our hearts are empowered. When we wait patiently, praying to God and studying his word, we are built up. As Christians we must endure, resting in the knowledge of God. We need to be long-suffering in our circumstances. One of the most important things to learn is that God has given you enough time to do everything he planned for you to do. No more. No less.
The Lord is going to return and though we might be anxious for his arrival, we need to be patient. God is coming in His time. We need to be preparing ourselves for his coming, patiently.
