Salt has so many uses. In fact, according to one web site, there are over fourteen thousand uses for salt. From deicing sidewalks to drain cleaning salt is a needed element in any home. Some of my favorite uses for salt have obvious metaphorical lessons attached.

A dash of salt placed in a pot of coffee will take the bitterness out. Metaphorical lesson: As Christians, being salt helps to remove the bitterness out of people’s lives.

Salt mixed with crushed ice is useful in cleaning coffee stains from glass coffeepots. Just swirl the ice and salt for a minute and the pot will be much cleaner. It is also useful for removing blood, wine, and urine stains. Metaphorical lesson: As Christians being salt can help remove the stains of sin.

My favorite use for salt is on food for flavoring. There are many people who put salt on everything from apples to zucchini. Beware too much salt can kill you especially if you have high blood pressure. Metaphorical lesson: As Christians, being salt adds flavor to the lives of those around us.

Salt has also been found to keep certain household pests away like ants and fleas. Metaphorical lesson: As Christians, being salt helps to keep those pesky sins away.

Salt is also used as a preservative, keeping foods like milk from spoiling for longer periods of time. Metaphorical lesson: As Christians being salt keeps others from going bad.

"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. Matthew 5:12

Salt has a plethora of uses, so we should be honored when Jesus refers to us as the "salt of the earth." Let us be faithful to the tasks he has given us. Help remove the bitterness in, keep from spoiling, and add flavor to others lives. Aid in removing keeping those pesky sins away. Be useful in removing the stains of sin. Be the salt of the earth you were called to be.
