The Gay Blades: photo by King Pin Photo

Tri-state area, trash-pop duo The Gay Blades are a rarity in today's music scene. They follow no generic formula, they're unafraid to call their fans out on improper concert etiquette  and they tour relentlessly in their beat up van. They've been lauded by rock critics, worked with Playboy and signed to one of music's most well-know indie labels. Yet it seems that no one truly knows what to make of The Gay Blades.

The Gay Blades re-released their debut album, Ghosts, after signing to Triple Crown Records in 2008. Their first single, "O Shot," a foot stomping anthem, brief on words, but huge on riffs, quickly caught the ears of underground tastemakers around the United States and even overseas generating huge amounts of buzz about the unique duo. However, it is their indescribable live show that proved to be the band's defining factor.

Guitarist and vocalist, James Wells a.k.a. Clark Westfield, and drummer, Quinn English a.k.a. Puppy Mills, were in several bands together before settling into the duo that would become The Gay Blades and their comfort with each other definitely shows. Part sincere indie rocker and part loud mouth, sarcastic, southern persona, Wells fronts the band with the sort of bravado that is rarely seen on stage in this day and age of quiet, sensitive, indie frontmen, while English easily slips into the role of straight man on stage. Most importantly, Wells capably commands the attention of everyone in the room while he plays his vintage guitar and stomps his boots, but is unafraid to pause the band's songs for a quick story, sarcastic comment or to let an audience member know that he can see them texting.

The Gay Blades hit Buffalo's own Mohawk Place on Sunday, July 26 withthe BBQ Across America Tour also featuring  Ace Enders and a Million Different People, Person L, The Dangerous Summer and School Boy Humor. Tickets are $12 pre-sale and doors open at 6 pm. As with most shows at Mohawk Place ages 16 and up are admitted with ID.
