Trip Report, The St.Sebastian River, near Fellsmere, Florida

This trip report is from Kayak Rendevous 2009, an annual paddling event for paddlers from all around the state. The event was a big success and a great time was had by all. Watch this column for the location of next year's event.

The trip started at the intersection of 512 and 510 in Indian River County.
There is a sign from 512 that says "Kayak/Canoe Launch". Follow the dirt road around about 1 mile. There is very rough patch of shoreline and a dock. There are no bathrooms, no water. There are 2 picnic tables and a parking lot.

From the launch site, paddle with the current, a left turn from the dock. The River is very narrow for the first mile and there are obstacles (trees and branches) to negotiate.

On this day, there was a bird and reptile shortage. The sun was warm and bright, occasional clouds provided some much needed shade, and the company was fabulous.

My group paddled very slowly. The 6 mile stretch of river took 2 1/2 hours. The take-out spot was Dale Wimbrow Park, off Roseland Road in Roseland, a few short miles from the launch site. This park has running water, bathrooms, covered picnic tables, and a single boat ramp. This would also be a great spot to launch and simply explore upstream and downstream, maybe at full moon, and bring a snack, or wine.

If you go, bring plenty of water, a few friends, sunscreen, insect repellant, extra equipment, and a sense of adventure.
