Michael Jackson interview with Oprah Winfrey, full video

This interview took place in 1993 between Michael Jackson and Oprah Winfrey. The entire interview is from You Tube and I have it included in the player below. The interview begins with Michael telling Oprah that he never gets nervous, to Oprah’s obvious surprise. He discusses James Brown and refers to him as a genius. Michael had always stated that James Brown was a tremendous influence on him. He described James Brown’s influence to Oprah as ‘phenomenal’. Other artists that Michael said were influential included the Bee Gees, Jackie Wilson, and Motown music.

Oprah asked Michael whether he felt comfortable on or off stage. Michael replied that he felt comfortable on stage, but off stage became very sad. He expressed that he would often cry from loneliness, beginning at the ages of eight or nine. It was in this interview where Michael shared with the public that he would perform his schoolwork then rehearse for the rest of the evening. He said he would become very sad when he would see other children outside playing and he had to work. His friends consisted of his brothers. Michael made it very obvious that he was a lonely and wanted childhood friend.

In the Oprah Winfrey interview, Michael discusses how it was awkward for him to get older and leave childhood behind and enter his teen years. He expressed feeling that the public wanted him to stay as a little child, yet as he grew, he felt uncomfortable with his appearance. He was extremely self-conscious regarding the condition of his skin and acne. It is then that he begins to describe emotional and physical abuse with his father Joseph (Joe) Jackson. Michael also addresses issues such as skin bleaching and plastic surgery. He told Oprah that the answers to all of these questions are in his book ‘Moonwalk”. When Oprah asked him if he was pleased with his appearance and through with plastic surgery, Michael responded:

I’m never pleased with myself. No, I try not to look in the mirror.
