A beef recall that was issued on June 24, 2009 has expanded including approximately 380,000 pounds of beef products. The health risk associated with the meat recall is high due to possible contamination with the E.coli 0157:H7 bacteria. The original beef recall encompassed approximately 41,000 pounds of beef and beef products. The recalled meat came from a Colorado based company, JBS Swift Beef Company located in Greeley, Colorado.
The recalled beef products were produced before April 22 and April 21, 2009. They were shipped to Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, and Wisconsin. The beef recall has expanded due to the ongoing investigation between the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). To date, there have been 24 reported illnesses. Due to the increasing reports of sickness, the FSIS expanded their investigation and the company complied. After reviewing their safety procedures and standards, JBS Swift Beef Company chose to expand the recall.
