A Pine Plains, New York Dutchess County sheriff’s spokesperson said that the gunman who held a principal hostage at Stissing Mountain High School has been arrested. Reports state that the gunman had entered the school that was full with children and took a principal hostage. The school was placed on immediate lockdown as the gunman brought the hostage into a room. SWAT was called to the scene and was able to establish contact with the gunman while he and his hostage were holed up in the room.

Parents arrived at the Stissing House parking lot (a restaurant) where they waited anxiously for news as well as children who might arrive after they were evacuated from the school. The school, Stissing Mountain High in Pine Plains, NY is approximately two hours away from New York City.
As negotiators continued speaking with the gunman it was believed that though the Stissing Mountain High school was on lockdown, the students weren’t in immediate danger as police had entered the school and the gunman was in an isolated area. There were approximately 600 people in the school: 500 students and approximately 100 staff. The identity of the gunman has been kept hidden from the public, but it is believed that he is the father of a student who was recently suspended.
Pine Plains, NY Police have said that the gunman has a prior arrest record.
