A Wisconsin couple, Dale and Leilani Neumann were sentenced to 6 months in prison and 10 years probation in what has been referred to as a case of faith healing that resulted in death. Prosecutors allegeged that Madeline Kara Neumann did not have to die; should her parents have chose to seek medical attention for her rather than praying for her alone.
Madeline Neumann, 11, died on Easter Sunday of 2008 from undiagnosed Diabetes. Doctors stated that Madeline's condition was treatable. As 11 year old Madeline grew sicker, her family continued to pray, never taking her to a doctor. When Madeline could no longer walk, speak, or eat; her parents relied on faith healing and never took her to a hospital or sought medical treatment. Her parents said that they never believed she would die.
Marathon County Circuit Judge Vincent Howard stated that he didn’t believe the Neumann’s were bad people, but that they made a reckless decision. The couple faced up to 25 years in jail.
Judge Howard told the couple, “God probably works through other people, some of them doctors.”
The sentencing consists of each parent serving one month in jail, each year to stop and reflect upon their decision to pray rather than seek medical attention for their daughter.
The Neumann’s are appealing their convictions; due to their appeals, their jail sentences have been stayed.
