At least 24 people were killed by a series of militant blasts in northwest Pakistan today. According to reports by Al-Jazeera, the latest round of three blasts today killed at least 17 people who were on their way to a wedding. The group included women and children as they journeyed northwest, through Mohmand, an area known for high Taliban presence. It was possible that the bomb that detonated was a remote controlled bomb.
Another blast wounded at least 10 people in the city of Peshawar, the car bomb detonated in a restaurant’s parking lot. The Taliban have denied responsibility for the attacks stating that they only attack security apparatus, and the areas targeted today were known to have many children frequent the areas. The restaurant targeted also features a video club, a haven for youngsters.
Seven people were killed by a suicide bombing at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex located in Karma. The complex is Pakistan’s main air force facility where researchers work and maintenance is performed. The suicide bomber rode into the complex on a bicycle when the explosion occurred.
Yesterday morning, a Pakistani Senior Officer in the army, Brig. Moinuddin Haider, was gunned down while en-route in morning traffic.
Today’s attacks follow a month long rising trend in bombings and militant blasts, beginning with an attack on the United Nation’s food agency’s headquarters in Islamabad on October 5, 2009. That attack killed five staff members. Four days following that attack, a suicide bomber killed 53 people in the city of Peshawar. The following day, 14 were dead and an additional 9 militants after a nearly 24 hour standoff in Rawalpindi, where the headquarters for the Pakistani army is located.
On October 12th, two days following the raid in Rawalpindi, 41 were killed when a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb in the Shangla district. Between the 15th and 20th of October, 58 more people were killed by suicide bombers.
