The first part of this series focused on Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation’s dog parks in the Charlotte area. In addition to those county run parks, there are several community and privately owned doggie destinations worth checking out.

Waxhaw Way Dog Walking Park
This privately owned dog park is located in Waxhaw just south of Charlotte. The facility has 12 acres of shady trails, and a 1/2 acre fenced-in play area with an agility course made of doggie-tough playground equipment. There is also a Canine Swim Center. Reservations are required. Visit them on line for details.

The Preserve in Davidson
This fully enclosed dog park was completed in the fall of 2004 and features a hiking trail and natural area with a parking lot and water fountain. Dogs with a current Davidson dog tag and rabies vaccination can play with their canine friends all day long.

Barbara's Canine Café near the South Blvd Area
Owners looking for that special treat for their best friend can find the tail wagging best at Barbara’s Canine Café. The owners of this shop make all their doggies yum-yums on site and can customize orders with the pet’s name or customers can drop in to pick up a pre-made treat for their dogs to enjoy.

Dog Bar in NoDa
Charlotte’s only dog friendly bar is a pet owner’s dream. Guests can bring their furry friends and enjoy the beverage of their choice. All dogs are welcome if they are well behaved and have proof of rabies vaccines. Learn about special parties and other events here.

Bark in the Park
For the ultimate social experience owners should plan to attend Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation’s Bark in the Park event hosted each spring. Dogs and their owners are invited to join pooch parades and contests like pet/owner look-a-likes, best costume, best bark, largest dog, smallest dog, and best trick. Competitions include Frisbee catching and freestyle movement contests. Visit the parks and rec web site for updated information on this event.
