While Volvo’s ambitions are more modest for the new XC60 five-seat crossover (at least compared to Lexus' RX-series; for the review, go here), it still aims to tempt a few adventuresome souls out more obvious luxury SUV choices via a combination of svelte sheetmetal, athletic driving dynamics, and the firm’s legendary commitment to the well-being of driver and passengers.

The fitment of their new ‘City Safety’ system as standard is a demonstration of the latter. Using a myriad of interlinked systems, the XC60 has the ability to anticipate low speed accidents and apply the brakes, either minimizing a collision or avoiding it completely, at speeds up to 19mph. It’s quite remarkable to experience this Volvo stop itself, yet transparent unless needed.

While safety is expected of a Volvo, the XC60’s stunning looks aren’t. Both the wrapper and its contents are cutting edge, yet hew to traditional notions of Scandinavian design. Whether it’s the body’s strong shoulder line and bold graphics or the cockpit’s use of beautifully textured materials and cunningly contrived forms, all bespeak a level of mature confidence that is refreshing in a ‘Look at me!’ world.

The XC60’s driving demeanor, though, might be trying a bit too hard; it is undeniably aggressive, with tightly regulated body motions and no slack in the steering. But its ride motions can be quite abrupt, and it rarely feels settled. Volvo’s 281hp turbo’d strait-six energizes it for prompt response at all altitudes—yet returns sub-20s economy in real world use. A more well rounded dynamic countenance would serve well to broaden its appeal.

Yet the XC60 is undeniably engaging and exudes real character. Its sculptured exuberance and spacious all-weather practicality, ably abetted by Volvo’s unrivalled ability to look after passengers, make it a refreshing alternative.

THE BROKER'S VIEWPOINT: It’s hard to know what to make of the ownership experience for buyers of the new XC60. Volvo’s track record has been so mixed of late. When the more expensive XC90 debuted, they couldn’t keep up with demand, especially as it was one of the only mid-size crossovers with a 3rd row people larger than dwarves could actually make use of. But the poor reliability of models built up to roughly 2004, and lots of new segment entries combined to sink this largest Volvo’s resale prospects.

As of mid-2009, the company is up for sale, and this too is affecting both new car sales and used car valuations. On the positive side of the ledger, not only are Volvo’s cars and SUVs more reliable lately, but they have some great new products in the pipeline. And the company still has a loyal following and great equity in their name. The safer bet would still be to go for a decent lease package, so that the company—not you—take the risk.
