Audi will tell you that the new A4’s MLB structure, which moves its engine rearwards a critical few inches to lessen its nose-led dynamics, make it the driving equal of the legendary BMW 3-series. I will tell you that what’s much more significant is the four inch-plus stretch in length which opens up the back seats to comfortable habitation by normal folk.

All occupants will appreciate that the A4’s interior is the usual Audi lesson in high-quality craftsmanship and comfort. The driver interfaces are intuitive and the plethora of techie options enticing. The more dramatic styling of this new Audi also helps set it apart, though it only really comes into focus when equipped with the larger wheel and tire packages.

In these areas the Audi matches or bests its Bavarian rival. And this new A4 is more rewarding to drive than its predecessor, but it’s still no match for the iconic 3. In basic form, there’s too little absorbency over broken pavement, and the steering feel is overlight. Things get better when it’s equipped with the stiffer Sport package, which not only handles and steers more sweetly, but also has a better resolved ride quality.

Upper-end 2009 A4s were available with a V6, and while there was nothing wrong with the 265hp 3.2-liter mill, the base 211hp direct-injection turbo four outguns it for mid-range muscle (258lb-ft of torque compared to 243) and fuel economy. Mid-20’s mileage is easily attainable in mixed use despite the Quattro all-wheel drive and the fun of proving out its sub-six second 0-60 performance. Therefore Audi dropped the V6 for 2010, replacing it in the lineup with the new S4, featuring a supercharged, 333hp V6. Most buyers will go for the responsive six-speed auto, which is a shame, as the manual tranny’s tight feel makes for a very fulfilling experience.

Audi doesn’t really need to worry if the A4 still isn’t the 3-series equal dynamically—nothing is. This new one has so many other strengths: a roomier, more inviting interior, confidently individualistic styling, and better pricing structure, and a better base engine, that for many, it will be the better choice.

THE BROKER’S VIEW: The A4 has been gaining on the BMW 3-series in resale value too, though it’s still not matching it at auction—yet. The increased size of this new one will no doubt make it of more interest to a greater number of buyers; whether the lack of a V6 will hurt the 2010’s residuals will most likely be down to the price of gasoline.

Price range: $31,925-49,925
