You're ready to start that great telecommuting job. Is your home-office ready?
Here are a few key tips to help you get started:
*Set up a defined work space: An extra room, basement or bare attic is ideal for your work area and to keep you out of the flow of home traffic. No such luck? Try using a cornered off area of a den or dining room. Just make sure that everyone that shares the home respects this area as your personal work space.
*Organize, organize, organize: This cannot be stressed enough for a home-office to be efficient or well ran. You must have enough room to actually work and to store things such as supplies and files. Be sure to keep the items you need the most frequently the most easily accessible.
*Lighting is important: If at all possible have an area with a lot of natural light. If this is impossible, make sure general lighting is adequate to your work area. You can add lamps here and there that are more specific to your needs.
*Desks of every shape and size: If space is at a premium you will need a desk with lots of drawer and filing space. You'll also need one that will hold the computer, phone and a writing/drawing area. Don't purchase a small, cramped desk where you can't possibly, comfortably get any work done.
*What about sitting? Choose a comfortable chair. This may be the most important piece of equipment in your office. Make sure it has ample back support and adjustable height controls. Chairs that are too high or too low can cause leg stress.
