The 2009 World Series is a 59 year old rematch between the National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies and the American League Champion New York Yankees. The 2009 Phillies enter this years series as the defending World Champions. Back in 1950 the New York Yankees were the defending World Champs. Back then the average cost of a home was $8400.00 and a gallon of gas cost 18 cents.
In 1950 game 1 went to the Yankees in a 1-0 shutout. Game 2 witnessed a 9 inning 1-1 standoff. In the tenth Joe DiMaggio hit a solo home run giving the Yankees a 2-1 victory and a 2games to none lead. Game 3 saw the Phillies starter Ken Heintzelman take a 2-1 lead into the eighth inning against Yankee starter Eddie Lopat. Heintzelman retired the first two Yankees but then faltered, walking the next three batters. Jon Konstanty came in in relief and caused Yankee batter Bobby Brown to hit a grounder to Phillies shortstop Granny Hamner. Hamner fumbled the ball and the Yankees tied the game. The Yankees sealed game 3 scoring one more run in the ninth for a 3-2 win.
The Phillies were keeping pace with the perennial champs by only losing in three consecutive one run decisions.
Yankee manager Casey Stengel started up-and-comer Ed “Whitey” Ford in game 4. Yankee slugger Yogi Berra led New York's attack with a run scoring single and a solo homer allowing Ford to breeze into the ninth with a 5-0 lead. A shutout seemed certain when Andy Seminick hit a textbook fly ball to Yankee left fielder Gene Woodling. He proceeded to drop the ball allowing two Phillies runners to score. Allie Reynolds came in to pitch and got the last out making the Yankees repeat World Champions.
One other indication of how times have changed since 1950, other than the cost of housing and gas is that the 1950 World Series was the last all-white World Series.
