As I've mentioned time and again, Houston's art scene is relatively hidden (perhaps I say that because it took me a while to find it!). It's like a gem hiding between layers of asphalt, glittering among the entangled highways and beltways, living in beautifully old buildings with slippery wooden floors. To get a glimpse of it, you must be patient but most of all, open-minded.
Once you've discovered the creativity that resides in this busy city, test the waters! Fine art at the MFAH, contemporary art, local art. There is something for everyone, art enthusiast or not.
Although my artistic interests vary, I tend to gravitate toward one craft in particular: photography. To fulfill my photographic needs, so to speak, I regularly make my way to Vine Street Studios, home of my second home, FotoFest.
FotoFest is currently exhibiting POKE!, curated by FotoFest Exhibitions Coordinator Jennifer Ward. As Ms. Ward says, “contemporary artists are also turning to the online world for source material or inspiration.” Featured artists explore "the inter-personal intentions of social media technology and the nature of modern internet-mediated relationships with work that references and uses source material from popular online social media websites such as Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, Craigslist, and YouTube."
Special POKE! events include:
-Saturday Artists Video Chats 2pm at FotoFest: September 12, October 10, October 24
-Kool-Aid Man's Second Life Fieldtrip with Jon Rafman: Thursday, September 17, 5-10pm at Boheme
-MySpace Karaoke Party: Thursday, October 15, 8-10pm at Domy Bookstore
For more info: POKE! is on view until October 24, 2009. Gallery hours: Mon - Fri 10am - 5pm, Sat noon - 5pm.
