I'm not quite sure what I was expecting as I headed to the artists reception of New Visualism: Abstractions in Photography, the ongoing exhibit at FotoFest. The last thing I expected was to walk into a room displaying elegant black and white images by two international photographers: Fernando La Rosa from Peru and Stêpán Grygar from Czech Republic.
Having arrived early, I found the Vine Street building quite empty. Except for an ongoing tour conducted by one of the artist's, I had the place to myself. I took advantage of this quiet time and ventured upstairs to observe Fernando La Rosa's images. I was immediately drawn to his work and found myself traveling through time.
La Rosa speaks of "Exploring the ambiguities of seeing…the simultaneity of differing realities…images within images… We do not see situations as a whole but rather as a summary of a collection, of many objects and relationships..."
I have always associated contemporary art with colorful backgrounds and totally abstract subjects, and have found it difficult to relate to contemporary pieces. Although black and white photography clearly still lives, the images of New Visualism, curated by Wendy Watriss, the co-founder of FotoFest, create a new reality.
Grygar states, "I am interested and have always been interested in the freedom of imagery… My work is about creating something independent…When I first looked at photography, I saw the possibility of some new reality… I don’t want to be too tied down to the object itself… I am interested in the process of visual searching…"
I definitely encourage losing oneself in these two worlds of black and white.
