Generally speaking, my goal is to avoid becoming another calendar of events. I will however, from time to time, draw attention to certain Houston happenings worthy of missing your favorite television show. What I am about to reveal in this article, without a doubt, validates Houston’s expanding art scene, which I introduced in my first article Seeking Houston's hidden art scene. So for those of you who doubted your city’s artistic talent, get ready to crawl!
The date to remember is Saturday, November 22nd. And the event is the Houston Art Crawl! This yearly event truly is living proof of the creative vision of countless local artists who, for one special evening, unlock the doors to their secret spaces. It’s where the magic of art materializes: the mixing and spilling of paints onto canvas, late night darkroom printing, the carving of materials, along with the occasional broken window pane and tear-stained pillow. These are all perfectly normal signs of an artist’s daily dose of frustration...
Houston artists living in the Warehouse District of downtown will open their studios to the public, for free! What better way to learn about the birth of a painting, a photograph or a sculpture? Art Crawl is an artist-run committee dedicated to the contemporary arts, encouraging us to interact with artists in their living and working environment, all the while spreading the message that everyone’s art is of equal worth. So mark your calendar to roam around and mingle with Houston’s most unique community of artists. If you ask me, it’s a brilliant idea. I mean, we organize pub crawls so why not go studio hopping?
