Dozens of anti-government militia groups are cropping up by the dozens all over the U.S. According to the Associated Press, such groups are fueled by a distrust of President Obama’s administration, along with the failing economy.
The majority of militia groups are based in the Pacific Northwest, the Midwest, and the Deep South. Newser reports that such groups are making full use of the Internet to recruit members, with warnings of a Mexican attempt to reclaim the Southwest—also known as the reconquista movement—and a deep ceded fear of the U.S. government imposing gun control measures.
During the Bush administration, anti-government militia groups were largely dormant, and such movements have not reached such a peak since the 1990s. According to Newser, there are also a number of lone militia men on the rise, such as the suspect accused of killing three Pittsburgh police officers in April.
