As investigators try and determine how Michael Jackson died, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office has subpoenaed a number of Jackson’s doctors to obtain his medical records.
According to the Los Angeles Times, one subpoena asked for “any and all” of Jackson’s medical records “including radiology and psychiatric records.”
Jackson’s dermatologist, Dr. Arnold Klein, was among the doctors who received a formal request from the coroner’s office. His attorney, Richard Charnley, told the Times, “It was a standard form subpoena and we turned over medical records to the medical examiner in response.”
Some of the doctors in question were identified through medications and other medical evidence found during a search of Jackson’s Holmby Hills mansion last week.
A source told the Times that Jackson had no trouble finding doctors who would prescribe him drugs. “They rotate in and out. There were a lot of doctors over the years. They liked to be known as Michael Jackson’s doctor.”
Experts said that the coroners and investigators need Jackson’s complete medical records to understand his medical status at the time of his death. This includes his drug-use history, pre-existing medical conditions, and previous medical procedures.
After obtaining this information, medical investigators will look into Jackson’s history, the reasons each drug he was taking was prescribed, the drugs’ side effects, and the interactions with other medications he was taking. Medical files must also be cross-referenced to try and recreate the knowledge each physician had at the time the prescription was being given.
