James von Brunn, an 88-year-old white supremacist, was charged with murder on Thursday for killing security guard Stephen T. Johns, 39, shot to death after he opened the door to let von Brunn into the Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Von Brunn then exchanged gunfire with guards who shot and critically injured him. This stopped von Brunn from entering the museum and hurting or killing other in the crowded museum, including schoolchildren and tourists.

Ashley Camp, 14, was on a field trip with 40 other students when she heard the gunshots.
A security guard ordered her and her group to run to the exit. “We had to sprint as fast as we could out the door… everyone started screaming and running,” said Ashley.
In 1981, von Brunn tried to kidnap members of the Federal Reserve and served more than six years in prison for the crime.
From the White House, just blocks from the museum, President Obama said,
This outrageous act reminds us that we must remain vigilant against anti-Semitism and prejudice in all its forms. No American institution is more important to this effort than the Holocaust Museum, and no act of violence will diminish our determination to honor those who were lost by building a more peaceful and tolerant world.”
