David Letterman’s alleged extortion case to be subject of NBC’s ‘Law & Order’
As accused David Letterman extortionist, Robert Halderman, prepares for court on Tuesday, reports emerge that the entire case will be the subject of a ‘Law & Order’ episode.
Rene Balcer, executive producer of the NBC series, told Access Hollywood that the show was working on an episode with an extortion plot when news of the Letterman case broke.
“We were already working on a blackmail story that’s somewhat more violent… And who knows? This one may add a spin to the story we’re working on,” said Balcer.

However, Access reports that a spokesperson from the show confirmed that the Letterman story will air.
Instead of a male, late night talk show host, the story will feature a female, daytime, celebrity talk show host. The host will have a number of affairs with the show’s staff, having managed to do so for some time. That is, until a blackmailer threatens to air her dalliances unless she pays out $3 million.
Halderman is scheduled to be in court on Tuesday and the Observer reports he is planning to fight the charges against him with a high-priced legal defense.
The former CBS News producer is accused of attempting to extort the ‘Late Show’ host for $2 million to keep quiet about the talk show host’s affairs with several staff members.
