On Thursday, 13 people were killed when an Army psychiatrist, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, allegedly opened fire on fellow soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas.

The dead include a pregnant woman who was preparing to return home, a man who quit his job with a furniture company to join the military just a year ago, a woman who was inspired to join the military after the Sept. 11 attacks, and a newlywed who had served in Iraq.

Francheska Velez, 21, was pregnant and planning to return home. Friends describe her as fun loving and happy. Her family and friends are stunned that she was killed on an Army base after just leaving a dangerous war zone.

Capt. John Gaffaney, 56, was a psychiatric nurse and had arrived at Fort Hood the day before the shooting to prepare for deployment to Iraq. As a younger man he had served in the California National Guard and the Navy, but after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, he decided to re-enlist. Initially, he was declined, however, he received a call around 2007 asking him to rejoin the military. Those who knew him said he just wanted to serve and help in any way he could. He is survived by a wife and son.

Pfc. Aaron Thomas Nemelka,19, hailed from West Jordan, Utah, and enlisted in the Army instead of going on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, according to Fox News. His family describes him as thoughtful and caring. Nemelka was scheduled to be deployed to Afghanistan in January.

Pfc. Michael Pearson, 21, was from Bolingbrook, Ill., and left his job at a furniture company to join the military a year ago. His mother, Sheryll Pearson, said her son joined the military because he was anxious to serve his country and see the world. She called him the "best son in the whole world," and said she will miss him terribly.

Spc. Jason Dean Hunt, 22, was from Frederick, Okla. and was a newlywed. He had served 3 1/2 years in the Army and had served in Iraq as well. Hunt's nickname was JD and those who knew him said he was kind, quiet, and an all-around good guy.

Michael Grant Cahill, 62, was a physician assistant and had a heart attack only two weeks ago. He returned to work at Fort Hood as a civilian employee after taking just one week off to recover. His daughter, Keely Vanacker, said "He survived that. He was getting back on track, and he gets killed by a gunman." She is in shock and total disbelief. Cahill was married to his wife, Joleen, for 37 years.

Spc. Frederick Greene was 29-years-old and from Mountain City, Tenn. He was assigned to the 16th Signal Company at Fort Hood, according to Fox News.

Staff Sgt. Justin M. DeCrow, 32, was helping train soldiers regarding new veterans and the paperwork they are required to complete. His family said he felt extremely safe at Fort Hood. His wife, Marikay DeCrow, said in a telephone interview with Fox News from the couple's home at Fort Gordon, Ga. "They should be safe there. They should be safe." The couple has a 13-year-old daughter, Kylah. "He was well loved by everyone. He was a loving father and husband and he will be missed by all," his wife said.

Sgt. Amy Krueger,29, from Kiel, Wis. was ready to take on Osama bin Laden, according to her mother, Jeri Krueger. She was prompted to join the Army after the 2001 terrorist attacks. When she told her daughter that she probably couldn't take on bin Laden by herself, Krueger replied,"Watch me."

Pfc. Kham Xiong, 23, hailed from St. Paul, Minn., and was married and the father of three young children. He came from a long line of miltary service including his father and grandfather, who both fought alongside the CIA against the Viet Cong. His father, Chor Xiong, said Friday, "I very mad," and believes his son died for "no reason." His sister, Mee Xiong, said the family would have understood if her brother would have died in battle. She said "He didn't get to go overseas and do what he's supposed to do, and he's dead ... killed by our own people." Xiong was one of 11 siblings. His brother, Nelson, is a Marine deployed in Afghanistan.

Juanita Warman, 55, was a military physician assistant, who had two daughters and six grandchildren. Her sister, Margaret Yaggie, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that her sister had spent most of her career in military service

Major L. Eduardo Caraveo, 52, came to the U.S. as a teenager from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, with little knowledge of the English language, according to his son, also named Eduardo Caraveo. He obtained a doctorate in psychology and worked with bilingual special-needs students prior to starting his own practice.  He was preparing to head to Afghanistan.

Russell Seager was a psychiatrist who joined the Army to help soldiers coming home from war to return to civilian life. According to Fox News, Seager taught at Bryant & Stratton College in Milwaukee, Wisc.
