Shiloh Pepin, the girl born with a condition known as ‘mermaid syndrome,’ has died at the age of 10. She had been hospitalized in critical condition for almost a week prior to her death on Friday.
Living an entire decade was a feat for Shiloh, as when she was born, doctors thought she would only survive a few days.
Her condition caused her legs to be fused from the waist down, she had no genital organs, and only one of her kidneys partially worked, according to the Los Angeles Times. Shiloh did not undergo surgery for her condition because blood vessels that crossed from side to side would have been severed.
Her mother, Leslie Pepin, said Shiloh came down with a cold early in October, which later turned into pneumonia. On Oct. 10, she was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment and placed on a ventilator and antibiotics.
Shiloh was a fifth-grader at Kennebunkport Consolidated School in Maine and received national recognition as the 'Mermaid Girl' after an appearance on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ and a special on TLC.
Shiloh will be remembered fondly and the Times reports she inspired many through “…the television shows, news articles, Facebook and other Web sites.”
